Multi-instrumentalist Randy Clepper is in demand as a player of Irish traditional music as well as other forms of traditional music (European, North and South American, Asian, etc.) on cittern/bouzouki, fingerstyle acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, and hammered dulcimer. Randy performs solo and with several other musicians from the central Ohio area. He performs regularly with Christine Fraser Ramsey (Scottish harp) as half of the duo Begley’s Braes, with Irish fingerstyle guitarist John Sherman, and with the exciting and eclectic collaboration “Hammer On!”. Randy is an active player in the central Ohio Irish music scene, and is a regular at traditional Irish music sessions around the area. He has performed in traditional music and arts festivals across the US. Randy’s background covers many styles of music including traditional, folk, pop, rock, jazz, funk (yes, funk) and bluegrass. He has taught irish bouzouki, DADGAD guitar and hammered dulcimer workshops at many festivals across the country, and is in demand as a recording sessions musician. He is a former member of the traditional Irish band Aisling (Charlene Adzima, Andi and Steve Wolfe, and Rick Nelson). Randy hails originally from southeast Tennessee, where he also taught guitar, did studio work, and played in several area bands.
In 2003, Randy teamed up with nationally known hammered dulcimer players Dan Landrum (TN, dulcimer player for Yanni), Mark Wade (OH, 1998 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion), and Bob McMurray (WA, dulcimer player/guitarist) to form the dulcimer super-group “Hammer On!”. The group released their first CD in 2004 entitled “Hammer On!”, an exciting and eclectic collection of mostly original music borrowing from styles as diverse as the backgrounds of its talented members. Click here to order the album, or go to www.hammeron.com for more info on the band.
Randy has a solo CD which he recorded, engineered, and mastered entitled “Within a Mile”, containing mostly Irish/Celtic instrumental music on cittern, guitar, and hammered dulcimer (click here to order). Click here for a review of the CD from the Dulcimer Player’s News. Randy is also featured on Dan Landrum’s “Winter Mix” CD.
Randy is currently working on two new recording projects -- a duo CD with John Sherman, and a “solo” CD with Zac Leger, Chrlene Adzima and others in the US and with Bert and Eva Deivert (and some surprise guests!!) in Sweden. Look for both to be released in 2009.
Some of Randy’s past festivals/performances include:
- Dublin Irish Festival, Dublin, Ohio
- Cincinnati Celtic Festival, Cincinnati, Ohio
- Columbus Arts Festival, Columbus, Ohio
- Dulcimer Days festival (w/DanLandrum and Mark Wade; Ken Kolodner [Greenfire, Helicon] and Steven Siefert [National Mountain Dulcimer Champion]), Roscoe Village, Ohio
